Local Event Raises $21K for Monongahela Valley Hospital's Regional Cancer Center

Creators and organizers of the 14th Annual Bar Crawl for Breast Cancer donated $21,165 to Monongahela Valley Hospital's Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center recently. Standing are Lisa Kutcy of Belle Vernon with MVH's Director of Fund Development Melissa Marion of New Brighton and VP of Fund Development Sara Schumacher of Washington, Pa. The money will help upgrade the mammography equipment at Monongahela Valley Hospital's Rostraver facility, HealthPLEX Imaging, and will offset the cost for breast screenings for women who are uninsured or underinsured.

It started in 1999 when four friends decided to create a local version of a big-city, girls' - night-out event to benefit a good cause - 17 people attended.

Fourteen years later, the event has grown to nearly 600 men and women and the organizers decided to donate the money raised - $21,165 - to Monongahela Valley Hospital's Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center.

The 14th Annual Bar Crawl for Breast Cancer, held the third Saturday of each October, filled the streets of Broad Avenue in North Belle Vernon Oct. 19 with men and women decked out in pink for a good cause.

Attendees donate $20 to participate and visit more than 11 establishments to raise money and awareness for breast cancer and to rally around local survivors. The facilities make cash donations, sell T-shirts, breast cancer awareness ribbons and other products as well as sponsor teams.

"Support for this cause grows in participation and money every year, and we are very dedicated to support a cure for breast cancer," said event founder Debra L. Cashman-Miller of Fayette City. "If someone in my family is planning a wedding, they know it can't be the third Saturday in October."

She said everyone she meets at the event has a story to tell of how cancer or breast cancer affected their loved ones and their lives. She said one young man sponsors a team of six every year because he lost his mother to breast cancer.

"The generosity of people and businesses from this event is amazing," said MVH President and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr., who stopped to thank the ladies. "This is what happens when people start talking and thinking about helping locally - what a benefit to the community."

Mr. Panza said the donation will help to purchase a $330,000 digital mammography unit for the hospital's HealthPLEX Imaging facility in Rostraver. Some of the money will also be used to offset the cost for breast screenings for women who are uninsured or underinsured.

The event creators and organizers were Debra L. Cashman-Miller of Fayette City, and Lisa Kutcy, Dana Shupenko and Nancy Stinogle, all of Belle Vernon.

When they created the event 14 years ago, all four were members of the Belle Vernon Musical Auxiliary and all but Miss Stinogle worked together at Cashman and Company Hair Salon in Belle Vernon.

Miss Stinogle is an EKG tech in the Cardiology Department at Monongahela Valley Hospital and recommended that the group donate the funds to MVH to help the cause locally.

The event began and ended at the Hungarian Club in Pricedale. Other facilities that participated this year included American Legion Post # 659 of Belle Vernon, Belle Vernon Musical Society, The Foster House, Frosty Mugs, Just a Tavern, Loyal Order of Moose #209 Belle Vernon, PNA #976 Arnold City, Russ' Tavern, Russian Club, and Wide Glides Bar & Grill.

The following organizations and people also made significant contributions to this year's event: Allenport Rod & Gun Club, Bridgette Beckinger, Marlyn Bradley, Cashman & Company Hair Salon, Bill & Tracy Cathers, Charleroi Cooperative Association/Belgium Club, Country Elm Frame Gallery, Doggie Spa, Exxon 70, Fairhope Rod & Gun Club, Shelby & Sue Ferguson, Lori Friend, Gillock Stables, Cindy Grimm, Pat Gun, Mr. & Mrs. T.
