Dr. Hiram A. Gonzalez (left) recently joined Dr. Chito M. Crudo, as a general surgeon at Monongahela Valley Hospital. The community will benefit now that Dr. Gonzalez' skills and new innovations in surgery are combined with Dr. Crudo's many years of experience in the practice of general surgery.
(August 20, 2012 - Carroll Township, Pa.)

Does anyone remember the song that was popular in the mid-1970s by 10cc "The Things We Do for Love?" People do extraordinary things to please the ones that have captured their hearts. Hiram A. Gonzalez, M.D., moved approximately 1,750 miles from his birthplace of Rio Piedras, Puerto Rico to make his fiancée, Nicole, happy. Since his bride-to-be grew up in Donora, when they marry, the couple plans to move close to the Valley where he is the newest surgeon at Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH). Dr. Gonzalez recently joined Chito M. Crudo, M.D., who performs general surgery at MVH.

Dr. Gonzalez had an exciting journey on his way to MVH. After receiving his medical degree from Ponce School of Medicine in Ponce, PR, he performed his General Surgery residency at UPMC Mercy. He then completed a fellowship in Minimally Invasive and Bariatric Surgery at the Medical College of Wisconsin in Milwaukee where he also served as a clinical instructor of General Surgery.

"I have spent my training and much of my career at very populated, urban hospitals," said Dr. Gonzalez. "I want to make a career and a life in a community where the hospital has a patient- centered focus and I have found that commitment at Monongahela Valley Hospital. In fact, the new operating suites that MVH opened earlier this year are designed with all of the technology needed to perform laparoscopic surgery which is my area of skill and training."

Laparoscopic surgery, which is known as minimally invasive surgery, is performed on people with a growing number of ailments ranging from gall bladder disorders to acid reflux disease because it offers many benefits such as: enabling patients to return home sooner; allowing people to resume work faster; creating a smaller incision; causing less trauma to the body.

Dr. Gonzalez is highly respected among his colleagues.

"I am excited and I welcome Dr. Hiram Gonzalez in my practice and here at Monongahela Valley Hospital," said Dr. Chito Crudo. "Dr. Gonzalez is well-trained in minimally invasive surgery. By combining his skills and new innovations in surgery with my many years of experience in the practice of general surgery will truly benefit the people of the Monongahela Valley."

Walter Cox, M.D., president of Monongahela Valley Hospital's Medical Staff, shares Dr. Crudo's enthusiasm. "It is great to have a newly trained young surgeon who is trained in the minimally invasive techniques. Dr. Gonzalez will have the benefit of working with Dr.Crudo who has vast experience and a great bedside manner. It should be a very good complimentary experience for both surgeons and MVH patients."

Awards from many renowned medical centers fill the walls of his office such as the Clinical Recognition Award from the Ponce School of Medicine; UPMC Mercy's Values in Practice and Golden Scalpel awards; and the Outstanding Laparoendoscopic Resident Award from the Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons.

Dr. Gonzalez works with Dr. Crudo and he can be reached at 724-929-4122. His office is located at 25 Fayette Avenue in Belle Vernon.

This fall, he will be the featured physician presenting an "Innovations in Medicine" program focusing on reflux disease at Monongahela Valley Hospital and the Mon-Vale HealthPLEX. Look for the dates on the hospital's November calendar of events.
