Monongahela Valley Hospital Continues U.S. News & World Report Recognition as a High Performing Hospital for COPD and Heart Failure

(July 28, 2020 - Carroll Township, Pa.)

Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) has once again been recognized as a High Performing Hospital for 2020-21 by U.S. News & World Report.

For the fourth consecutive year, Monongahela Valley Hospital earned a "High Performing" rating for COPD. In addition, 2020 marks the third time MVH received the "High Performing" rating for Heart Failure. Both of these ratings are in recognition of care that was significantly better than the national average as measured by factors such as patient outcomes. "High Performing" is the highest rating U.S. News awards for those types of care.

The annual Procedures & Conditions ratings, now in their 6th year, are designed to assist patients and their doctors in making informed decisions about where to receive care for common conditions and elective procedures. These ratings extend the U.S. News mission of providing consumers with patient decision support beyond the Best Hospitals rankings, which are geared toward complex specialty care.

"We are delighted by the recognition but not surprised," remarked MVH President and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr. "Three years ago, we created our Community Care Network (CCN) for people with chronic conditions such as COPD and congestive heart failure to continue receiving the help they may need when they leave our hospital and are transitioned to the next step in their care. We know that our progressive initiatives to provide evidence-based therapies to our patients are resulting in positive outcomes and these designations support our efforts."

For the 2020-21 ratings, U.S. News evaluated more than 4,500 medical centers nationwide in 10 procedures and conditions. Fewer than a third of all hospitals received any high-performing rating.

"For more than 30 years, U.S. News & World Report has been helping patients, along with the help of their physicians, identify the Best Hospitals in an array of specialties, procedures and conditions," Said Ben Harder, manager editor and chief of health analysis at U.S. News. "The hospitals that rise to the top of our rankings and ratings have deep medical expertise, and each has built a track record of deliver good outcomes for patients."

The Procedures & Conditions ratings were produced by U.S. News analysts. The U.S. News Procedures & Conditions methodology is based entirely on objective measures of quality such as risk-adjusted outcome rates, volume, quality of nursing and other care-related indicators.

MVH is consistently recognized for providing high-quality care for heart failure patients and people with COPD. The health system also earned the following distinctions related to those conditions:
  • The American Heart Association's Get With the Guidelines - Heart Failure Gold Plus Quality Achievement Award.
  • The Best Hospitals for Heart Care distinction from The Women's Choice Award™.
  • A Five-Star Recipient for the Treatment of COPD from Healthgrades.
  • Advanced Disease-Specific Certification in COPD from The Joint Commission.
