The members of the Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources Inc. give their time, energy, and creativity year round to enhance quality patient care at Monongahela Valley Hospital. On June 30, at the 36th annual Auxiliary Appreciation Dinner celebrating the volunteers, the group collectively gave even more.

The Auxiliary made a substantial donation to MVH when its outgoing President Ruth Antonelli presented checks totaling $52,000 to MVH President and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr. When combined with the funds the group donated to the hospital's annual gala in May and to the annual Volunteen Scholarship, the Auxiliary's 2014 donation climbs to $54,000.

This year's gift brings the Auxiliary's 36-year donation total to MVH to more than $3,179,000.

"On behalf of our employees, physicians, board of trustees and most importantly our patients, I extend our sincere appreciation to each and every one of you for your untiring efforts in raising these funds for our hospital," said Mr. Panza. "This is truly another prime example of how you excel in one of the major roles that you play here at Mon Valley Hospital - and that is fundraising."

The group generated the funds for this donation through sales at the MVH Gift Shop and with a multitude of special events held throughout the year, including the Annual Strawberry Festival, an ice cream social, clothes and purse sales, Gyro and candy sales and the Annual Apple Fall Festival.

The Auxiliary's donation will be used for several enhancements that will benefit patients and their families. MVH will purchase integrated vital sign machines which take the patients' blood pressure and pulse with greater accuracy and efficiency, and transfers the vitals into the patients' electronic records. Other enhancements include televisions and new upholstery for the Emergency Department. A portion of the donation will be used as part of the five-year pledge to the hospital's Capital Campaign.

During the celebration, awards were also presented to Auxiliary members who reached milestone hours of volunteer time at MVH. Recipients included:

The Auxiliary also presented two $500 Volunteen Scholarships to two outstanding young women who volunteered at the hospital for a combined 409 hours. The awardees were in the top one third of their graduating class, volunteered at least 100 hours over two years and plan to pursue a health care related career.

The first scholarship was awarded to Megan R. Planey, a recent graduate of Belle Vernon Area High School. Miss Planey volunteered 239 hours over three years in the SameDay Surgery department and in other areas of the hospital.
