Monongahela Valley Hospital Is Designated a Blue Distinction Center® for Hip and Knee Replacement
(June 13, 2013 - Carroll Township, Pa.)
If your hips and/or knees have suffered damage from arthritis or injury and you find it difficult to complete normal activities such as walking or climbing stairs, you want the best treatment available. Residents of the Monongahela Valley and surrounding areas receive expert hip and knee replacement care from the medical professionals that they know and trust at Monongahela Valley Hospital - and the hospital has the credentials to prove it.
MVH is designated a Blue Distinction Center for Knee and Hip Replacement® with "Total Value Distinction" by the BlueCross/BlueShield Association. The "Total Value" designation is only given to facilities that deliver high quality and low cost.
Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement meet strict quality criteria and demonstrate an expertise in quality care. Only hospitals and health care facilities with proven track records for delivering better results - including fewer complications and readmissions - earn this designation. To date, fewer than 550 facilities nationwide have been designated as Blue Distinction Centers for Knee and Hip Replacement. This distinction is yet another that MVH has earned for excellence in hip and knee replacement. Previously, the hospital received The Joint Commission: Disease Specific Certification in the Management of Joint Replacement - Hip and Knee as well as the distinction as an AETNA Institute of Quality® Orthopedic Care Facility - Total Joint Replacment.
Monongahela Valley Hospital provides comprehensive inpatient knee and hip replacement services, including total knee replacement and total hip replacement surgeries. In January 2013, the hospital introduced The Orthopedic Institute at Monongahela Valley Hospital, a comprehensive program that is based on a proven national model for hip and knee replacements. The program is structured around the fundamental principle of wellness.
"This is not your typical hospital program or hospital stay," said Thomas F. Brockmeyer, M.D. Ph.D., medical director of the Institute. Dr. Brockmeyer is one of three orthopedic surgeons who, along with the administrative and clinical team at MVH developed this innovative program to improve outcomes and provide a superior experience for individuals having hip or knee replacement surgery. Scott L. Baron, M.D., who is has an outstanding reputation for total hip and knee replacements, and Ari E. Pressman, M.D., whose areas of expertise include total hip and knee replacements as well as revision joint replacements, and Richard Mitchell, M.D., whose area of expertise is in the diagnosis and treatment of injuries to the shoulder, elbow, knee, and ankle, partner with Dr. Brockmeyer at the Orthopedic Institute.
"First and foremost, we do not see our patients as being sick," Dr. Brockmeyer explained. "Instead, we see our patients as healthy individuals who are coming to the hospital because they have hip or knee pain, and want to live a better quality of life by having joint replacement surgery."
The result of this new approach to surgery is less pain, quicker recovery, and superior outcomes, according to national best practice studies.
