The family of the late Kim Davis of Allenport was so touched by the quality of cancer care the 53-year-old wife and mother received at Monongahela Valley Hospital's Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center, that they held a fundraiser in her memory and made a $2,750 donation to help others battling the disease.
Husband James Davis and daughter Kelly Sesco, of Finleyville, lost Mrs. Davis to breast cancer on Dec. 31, 2011. The funds raised will help MVH's cancer patients with nutritional supplements vital to their treatment.
The family plans to donate annually to the fund.
"She (Kim) really loved listening to oldies music so we held an Oldies Dance on May 11 for her and my late mother-in-law, Diane Sesco (of North Carolina, who died of cancer at age 58)," said daughter Kelly Sesco. "It takes a long time to heal and part of the healing process is to fight back against this terrible disease and help others."
The oldies dance was the brainchild of Mrs. Sesco's 8-year-old cousin Gabrielle Nolder. Her parents are Tracy Barr, who also helped with the dance, and Ken Nolder. The family lives in Monongahela.
"We hope this annual event will also raise awareness about a disease that can surface at any time," she said.
The Regional Cancer Center medical staff members who cared for Mrs. Davis during her illness attended the check presentation and shared fond memories with her family, remembering her as "a real sweetheart."
MVH's Regional Cancer Center, which opened in 1985, is the second largest center in Western Pennsylvania, offering the cutting edge medical oncology and radiation oncology treatments; clinical trials; and innovative therapies for symptom management.
