Each year, Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) honors its nurses in early May to coincide with both National Nurses Week and the birthday of Florence Nightingale - the founder of modern nursing.

On May 7, MVH hosted a nurse appreciation breakfast to celebrate and thank its nurses. At the breakfast, Senior Vice President of Nursing, Mary Lou Murt, announced the Cameos of Caring Award winner.

Accepting the award to a standing ovation was Joseph Muntan of the Emergency Department. Mr. Muntan has been involved in emergency medicine since graduating high school and serving as a paramedic. He always goes above and beyond for his patients, their families and his co-workers. He talks with patients as if they were his own family and shows a positive attitude for patient care in overwhelmingly stressful conditions.

"Each day brings a new challenge to show each of our patients the care, love and healing strength that all of us at MVH possesses," said Mr. Muntan. "I felt that same caring when I was a patient here at Mon Valley. When I was diagnosed with abdominal cancer, I went to a larger institution and they gave me a 35 percent chance of survival. I came to Mon Valley for a second opinion and the staff here didn't give me a percentage. They made my fight, their fight. It is because of this nursing staff that I am a nurse today."

Sponsored by the University of Pittsburgh School of Nursing, the prestigious Cameos of Caring Award recognizes nurses who demonstrate excellence in nursing care, serve as advocates for patients and families and embody the essence of the nursing profession.
