Employees, physicians and friends of Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) - and its parent company Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. (MVHR) - will celebrate one of the organization's most nostalgic and anticipated traditions: the Annual Gala, on Saturday, May 16.

The theme for the 27th Gala is "A Night at the Museum."

The black-tie fundraiser benefits MVH, one of only a few dozen independent, non-profit community hospitals in western Pennsylvania. The event attracts nearly 600 guests and will be held in the Allegheny Grand Ballroom of the Westin Convention Center and Hotel in Pittsburgh.

During this memorable evening, guests will watch the museum come to life while enjoying a delicious dinner, visiting themed exhibits and dancing the night away. Gala 27 is open to the public and tickets cost $175 per person. Tables of 10 are also available.

A reception with cocktails and hors d'oeuvres will begin at 6 p.m., followed by dinner and the program at 7 p.m. Complementing the festive mood of Gala 27 will be Cityscape, a premier variety dance band.

Dimensions in Performance Awards will be presented to recipients to recognize outstanding dedication to MVH, the entire health care system and the community. The awards honor the multi-dimensional talents of special friends, benefactors and members of the heath care family who have distinguished themselves in the areas of philanthropy, medicine, volunteerism and civic well-being.

The 2015 awards and this year's awardees are:

Rose Award for Dimensions in Philanthropy - Thomas Simon, Howard Hanna. Mr. Simon helped establish the Free Care Fund at MVH to provide medical care to children regardless of insurance or their families' ability to pay. Mr. Simon hosts the annual Chow Chow Luncheon at Cedarbrook Golf Course in Rostraver that has raised more than $120,000 for the Hospital's Free Care Fund. This award recognizes members of the community for their benevolence and dedication to the enhancement of quality health care.

Sickman-Levin Award for Dimensions in Medicine - Paul N. Cervone, M.D., MVH's Valley Women's Health. A well-known obstetrician/gynecologist, Dr. Cervone is also a Colonel with the 28th Infantry Division of the Pennsylvania National Guard, where he served in Kosovo, Iraq and Afghanistan. His leadership roles at MVH include chairman of the Medical Staff Peer Review Committee, member of the Medical Staff Executive and Laser Safety committees and co-chairman of the Hospital's Emergency and Disaster Planning Committee, where he helps define and direct the emergency preparedness for the hospital. This award honors outstanding physicians who contribute to health care in the mid-Monongahela Valley.

Gibbons Award for Dimensions in Community Service - Lois C. Powala. A retired vice president at National City Bank, Mrs. Powala traded an office for volunteer opportunities with MVH providing community outreach with senior hospital leaders and physicians. She also serves on the Hospital's Patient Safety Committee, which oversees components of the patient safety program. This award honors those who are dedicated to the health, social and civic needs of area residents and help to improve the quality of life.

Rossomme Award for Dimensions in Volunteer Service - Sarah L. Wells. Mrs. Wells has been an active member of the Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Resources, Inc. for 47 years, making her the longest active member serving the organization. She serves as the chairwoman of the Gift and Memorial Fund and works tirelessly in the Hospital's Gift Shop. This award recognizes people who give of their time and talents in volunteer service to the health system.

This year's major sponsors include Amedisys Home Health and Hospice; Doctors First, Inc.; and Unidine. To become a sponsor, purchase tickets or for more information, contact the Office of Fund Development at or 724-258-1657.
