Nutrition and Food Service

MVH is committed to meeting the needs of everyone who utilizes the hospital's services and strives to provide quality care as well as comfort and convenience to family members and guests.

As part of that service, we offer a restaurant style menu for patients.

The menu was developed by the MVH Nutrition and Food Service Department and gives a plentiful assortment of meal choices. A heart symbol on the menu indicates items that are heart healthy and carbohydrates are listed beside appropriate foods. As a guide for the patient, there is a suggested carbohydrate servings per item when appropriate on the menu.

Patients may order meals at convenient times. If a patient wants lunch early, he or she can order it for delivery at 10:45 am. If they are hungry for a snack, they will be able to request whatever they want, when they want, provided it falls in the physician's prescribed diet. The patient simply calls in the order in advance or for delivery within one hour. A hospital patient may order food from our menu at any time between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m.

The Room Service option gives patients the opportunity to eat what they like most, at the times when they are hungry. Medical experts note that when people have access to foods they prefer, they tend to eat better - and eating well usually has a positive effect on recovery.

For patients who are unable to utilize the written menu or the telephone, a MVH nutrition assistant will visit each patient daily to obtain the patient's meal selection. The nutrition assistant will utilize the patient's physician ordered diet prescription to guide the patient in his/her choices. Diet appropriate alternatives also will be available upon the patient's request. The patient's daily choices are then electronically transmitted to our Nutrition and Food Service staff for creation.

The Nutrition and Food Service Department wants our patients to be extremely happy with their meals during their stay at Monongahela Valley Hospital.

For assistance with meals, Food and Nutrition Services staff are available during normal business hours. Just call 724-258-4115 and someone will be happy to assist you.

Your family and friends are encouraged to sample other menu selections in our Gift Shop or Cafeteria.

However, if a friend or family member wishes to dine with a patient, guest meals are available and may be purchased for a minimal fee of $5 each.

Bon Appétite!

Now is the time for holiday parties and entertaining. Here are three great and easy recipes to share with friends and family. MVH Executive Chef Phoebe

Rosemary Cashews
1 1/4 cup cashews
1-2 Tbsp coarsely chopped fresh rosemary
1/4 tsp cayenne
2 tsp brown sugar
1 Tbsp melted butter
Toss all the ingredients together and bake for 10-15 minutes. Allow to cool and enjoy. These tasty festive cashews are a hit at any holiday party. Adjust spices to your preference.

Baked Brie with Cranberries and Pecans
1 Package Pillsbury Crescent Dough
1 wheel of brie
1 cup dried cranberries
1 cup of pecans
1/2 cup of maple syrup
Unroll crescent dough. Take half of the dough and pinch the seams together. Place the wheel of brie in the middle top with the cranberries and pecans and drizzle the maple syrup. Place the other half of the dough, seal edges and bake. You may have extra dough, just bake separately because extra dough will cause the pastry to not fully cook. Bake at 325 for 25-35 minutes. Serve with crackers or baguette that has been toasted.

Phoebe's go to Meatballs
2 lb. of 1 oz meatballs
1 12 oz. bottle of Sweet Chili Sauce
Mix the meatballs with the chili sauce. Add 1/2 a cup of water to loosen the chili sauce. Cover and bake for 45 minutes at 350 degrees. Serve at any gathering. These little meatballs will be the hit of the party and they are so easy to make. You can also put them in a crockpot.
