At Monongahela Valley Hospital's 30th Annual Light-Up Night celebration Nov. 24, 7-year old Nico Bove (left) and 8-year old Shane Simon flipped the giant light switch to light up the Christmas decorations throughout several acres of the hospital's campus. MVH President and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr. and Queen Elsa from "Frozen" led the countdown. Nico is the son of David and Bethany Bove, of Carroll Twp. Shane Simon, age 8, is the son of Rhea Regul, of Belle Vernon; Both Nico's and Shane's mothers and one of their grandmothers work at MVH.

Santa and Mrs. Claus, Christmas carols, Elsa from "Frozen," decorations and a 7-foot-tall Frosty the Snowman entertained patients watching from their windows as well as families from the community who gathered at Monongahela Valley Hospital's 30th Annual Light-Up Night on Nov. 24.

After President and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr.'s welcome, the evening's grand moment came as two lucky children flipped the giant light switch, illuminating the two-story tree and several acres of decorations throughout campus.

Randomly chosen from among MVH employees' children and grandchildren ages 5 to 10, the boys who flipped the giant switch were:

  • Nico Bove, age 7, son of Bethany Bove, unit clerk, Emergency Department and David Bove, of Carroll Twp. He is a second grader at Ringgold South. Nico's grandmother, Susan Gavaghan, is an MVH OR nurse.
  • Shane Simon, age 8, son of Rhea Regul, medical secretary, Medical Oncology Department. They live in Belle Vernon. He is a third grader at Marion Elementary. Shane's grandmother, Amy Ashiq, works in MVH's Outpatient Fiscal department.

"On behalf of myself and our 1,100 employees, physicians and volunteers, I want to wish you a happy holiday season and tell you how pleased we are that you are here to kick off the 2014 Christmas season with us," said MVH President and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr.

New at this year's event were performances by Charleroi High School's Marching Band and Show Choir, under the direction of Ms. Laura Piecknick.

The Auxiliary of Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. sold baked goods, hot dogs and punch while Joseph's Nursery & Garden Center in Monessen donated and distributed light-up Christmas trees to the children.

"This is the week that we get together with our family and friends to count our blessings and I want to leave you with words from Charles Dickens' 'A Christmas Carol.' He said, 'Reflect upon your present blessings - of which every man has many,'" said Mr. Panza.
