More than 450 walkers helped Monongahela Valley Hospital (MVH) paint the Valley pink during the 11th Annual MVH/Lois Orange Ducoeur Breast Cancer Walk on Oct. 11 in Charleroi.

The event raised more than $21,100 to support the prevention, early detection and treatment of breast cancer in our community at MVH.

Walkers were asked to make a minimum donation of $10 each to participate and many collected donations from family, friends and neighbors. Breast cancer survivors were honored before the walk began with a group photo and a celebratory wave of Pink Power Towels. A moment of silence was also observed to remember those affected by breast cancer and those who are no longer with us.

Participants were encouraged to post their photos that day to Facebook, Twitter and Instagram using the hash tag #MonValleyGoesPink and organizers awarded prizes for the best overall pink attire, the male wearing the best pink and the pup(s) showing the most pink support.

"Even with the cooler weather, we were thrilled at the turn out for this year's walk," said Melissa Marion, MVH director of Fund Development. "There were lots of teams again and entire families came out to support or to remember their moms and sisters and aunts and grandmothers."

Several breast cancer survivors volunteer on the planning committee and they call the walk, "their victory lap."

The Breast Cancer Walk was created to honor the memory of Lois Orange Ducoeur, who lost her battle with cancer in 1965 at age 54. The Ducoeur family operated Orange's Gift store and Ducoeur Furniture Store in Charleroi for 118 years.

Major event sponsors included the Colgan Insurance Agency, MarBill Diamonds & Jewelry, Monessen/Rostraver Rotary and The Valley Independent/Trib Total Media.
