Monongahela Valley Hospital Hosts Symposium on Chronic Lung Diseases

(October 3, 2013 - Carroll Township, Pa.)

Experts from noted medical centers in the Pennsylvania and Maryland will discuss "Advances in Pulmonary Medicine" during the 2013 Medical Staff Symposium Wednesday, Oct. 16, from 7:30 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., at Monongahela Valley Hospital's Anthony M. Lombardi Education and Conference Center.

This annual medical education event is designed as an update for physicians, nurses and other health care professionals in the prevention, diagnosis and management of sleep disorders and chronic lung diseases, such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Its goal is to improve patient outcomes.

Physicians can earn a maximum of 5.0 American Medical Association Physician's Recognition Award (AMA PRA) Category 1 Credits™ and MVH will provide 5 continuing education credits for nurses. Upon completion of the program, participants should be able to:

  • Discuss the diagnosis and treatment options for patients with obstructive sleep apnea
  • Discuss the most current standards of assessment and treatment for COPD patients
  • Describe advanced pharmacologic and surgical options available for the treatment of patients with pulmonary disorders
  • Identify possible safety gaps that can occur with a patient's interdisciplinary plan of care

Speakers include physicians from John's Hopkins University School of Medicine, the University of Pittsburgh's Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine, Allegheny General Hospital and the Pennsylvania Patient Safety Authority in Harrisburg, Pa.

"We've been hosting this event at MVH for 24 years now, to update the doctors and nurses at our hospital and hospitals in the area on important medical issues," said Rheumatologist Ajay K. Mathur, M.D., who coordinates the event at MVH.

The registration fee of $25 includes a continental breakfast and lunch. MVH physicians may attend at no cost. For more information, call 724-258-1145.
