Monessen Mayor Louis Mavrakis recently issued a proclamation commending Monongahela Valley Hospital's commitment and service to cancer patients. The proclamation coincides with the 30th anniversary of the hospital's Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center which opened on June 30, 1985 and provides innovative and compassionate cancer care to the region.

"Our Cancer Center is on the cutting edge of treatments and therapies," said Louis J. Panza Jr., president and CEO of the hospital. "We are second to none and what truly sets our community hospital apart from the large teaching facilities is that we have some of the most skilled medical teams in the area providing care to their family, friends and neighbors. Our staff has an emotional connection to practically everyone who comes to us for care."

The Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center was the first center of its kind in Washington, Fayette and Greene counties. Today, it remains one of the largest cancer centers in the region. It is the only cancer center affiliated with a community hospital in the Pittsburgh region to offer High-Dose Radiation Therapy, which is a form of internal radiation therapy that involves placing a high-energy radiation source inside the body near the tumor for brief periods of time. In addition, MVH's Cancer Center is the first and still the only cancer treatment facility in Western Pennsylvania that offers radiation therapies using the new Elekta Agility multi-leaf collimator unit that provides precise, high-resolution beam shaping to target tumors and preserve healthy tissue.

MVH recently introduced a new, comprehensive website for its regional Cancer Center. The site, mvhcancercenter.com, is an invaluable resource that outlines services, what to expect during treatments, patient resources and more. For more information about the Cancer Center, visit the website.
