Monongahela Woman’s Club recently helped improve the ambiance for guests at Monongahela Valley Hospital’s Gift Shop, by raising nearly $700 to reupholster the heavily used lunch counter seats.

“While visiting my aunt, I saw that the seats could use some TLC, and I thought it would be a great project for our club to help with,” said Judy McCurry of Craven Hill, a past president and club member for 16 years.

She said it was a case of being in the right place at the right time.

Ms. McCurry approached the Gift Shop manager and then brought the idea to club President Marcia Barna, who guides the group in choosing projects each year. Club members agreed and Ms. Barna contacted Garrie Jackson of Jackson Upholstery in Monongahela to do the work.

“Garrie worked with the club to give us a discounted cost because he also saw the need while visiting a family member,” said Ms. Barna. “We let the Auxilians choose the fabric since they run the shop, and I think the seats turned out really well.”

The club held various fundraisers, including what have become two local traditions — selling homemade cranberry jalapeño jelly and hosting the annual Ringgold Senior Girls Tea at the Monongahela Fire Hall each April.

“The Gift Shop is a popular place to eat and now the Monongahela Woman’s Club has helped make our Gift Shop look its very best,” said Ruth Antonelli, president of Auxiliary. “We are very appreciative.”

The Monongahela Woman’s Club was created in 1938 to “develop the educational, civic and social interest of its members and advance the welfare of the community.” The group has approximately 50 members.
