As part of a recent tour of his legislative district, U.S. Representative Bill Shuster (R-PA) learned about health care options available to his constituents during a tour of the facilities and new technology at Monongahela Valley Hospital.

The congressman met with MVH President and CEO Louis J. Panza Jr. and several executive staff members, and visited the Radiation Therapy department, an operating suite and the Emergency Department, which sees approximately 34,500 patients each year.

The entourage first visited the hospital's new external beam radiation therapy (linear accelerator) unit, where Director of Radiation Oncology Debbie Burkhardt showed recorded real-time images of a tumor shrinking over the course of 25 treatments, which opened this particular patient's airways so he could breathe better.

"I think Representative Shuster was very impressed that you could watch the healing in process," said Chief Operating Officer and Senior Vice President Patrick Alberts.

The group also visited the hospital's newest addition to the Radiation Oncology department that will soon be available to patients. Called a large-bore CT scanner, the new unit is 40 percent larger than other diagnostic scanners for patient comfort and convenience. The machine can also accommodate a patient weighing up to 660 pounds.

"It was fantastic to see the lifesaving work being done by the staff of the Monongahela Valley Hospital," said Rep. Shuster. "These talented men and women are working hard every day to mend wounds and save lives, and the importance of community hospitals cannot be understated. Thank you to everyone at the Hospital for showing me the facility and working hard to keep the people of the area healthy and safe."

In addition to an operating suite and the Emergency Department, Rep. Shuster toured the expansive Anthony M. Lombardi Education Conference Center, where many of the hospital's community outreach programs are held. There he met Thomas F. Brockmeyer, M.D., Ph. D., who was preparing to give a free community lecture on joint replacements to 30 residents in the conference center that evening.

The Congressman was in town to serve as keynote speaker at the 49th annual Mon Valley Progress Council dinner meeting in Rostraver.
