Monongahela Valley Hospital Surgeon Performs First 2-Level FDA-Approved Cervical Disc Replacement in Southwestern PA

A Monongahela Valley Hospital orthopedic spine surgeon became the first in southwestern Pennsylvania to successfully perform a two-level cervical disc replacement procedure utilizing a novel medical device recently approved by the FDA.

Instead of a more traditional spinal fusion, Alexander Kandabarow, M.D., performed the successful surgery with the Mobi-C Cervical Disc (Mobi-C), the first and only total cervical disc replacement approved by the FDA in the United States to treat more than one level of the cervical spine.

"This is ideal for younger patients with ruptured discs who require surgery and who want an alternative to fusion - fusing the vertebrae together - which sometimes decreases mobility," said Dr. Kandabarow, a surgeon with The Orthopedic Group, which is affiliated with Monongahela Valley Hospital. "The disc replacement device maintains motion at the disc level."

Performed through the front of the neck, the total disc replacement device is used to treat pinched nerves in the neck and to relieve spinal cord pressure from a ruptured disc or from bone spurs.

In an FDA trial, at 24 months, those who received the two-level cervical disc replacement during the trial phase returned to work on average of three weeks earlier as compared to those patients who were treated with cervical fusion. The disc replacement patients also had lower rates of subsequent surgeries.

"I am very happy to be able to offer my patients this procedure with state-of-the-art technology supported by the highest level of medical evidence available," said Dr. Kandabarow. Over his 27-year career as a spine surgeon, Dr. Kandabarow has performed countless removals of herniated discs, called a discectomy.

Certified by the American Board of Orthopedic Surgery, Dr. Kandabarow has been with Monongahela Valley Hospital since 2002 and treats spinal problems, including degenerative disc disease of the cervical and lumbar spine, stenosis, as well as scoliosis.

Dr. Kandabarow sees patients at these Orthopedic Group offices: 1145 Bower Hill Road, Suite 301, Pittsburgh, Pa., 15243, 412-276-7022; and at 1633 Rt. 5, Jefferson Hills, Pa., 15025, 412-384-2240.
