Monongahela native Walter R. Cox, M.D., remembered his late mother-in-law, Nellie Fawcett Peart, with a donation to Monongahela Valley Hospital's Focus on the Future Capital Campaign. He and his wife, Beth, were grateful that she received such loving care at the hospital's Charles L. and Rose Sweeney Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Center.

Thanks to Dr. Cox and hundreds of other residents, businesses, hospital board members, physicians, hospital employees and Auxilians, the campaign was unhindered by the slow economic recovery and surpassed its original $2.5 million goal, reaching $2.7 million.

On Thursday (Feb. 13), Monongahela Valley Hospital officials unveiled the inscribed bronze donor plaques honoring the donors and other major gifts made to the hospital's largest capital campaign in its history.

Donors celebrated the campaign's unprecedented success and were given a private tour of the plaques in the hospital's main hallway and around the campus.

"Your support has been invaluable, you are touching the lives of your family, friends and neighbors who come from near and far for the excellent medical care that we provide at Monongahela Valley Hospital," Jack Fry, chairman of the Mon-Vale Health Resources, Inc. board of directors, told attendees prior to the tours. "You are perpetuating MVH's history of progress by impacting the health of the communities we serve and I thank you."

President and CEO of Monongahela Valley Hospital Louis J. Panza Jr. further echoed Mr. Fry's sentiments.

After the informal speeches, attendees divided into small groups and toured the hospital where their individual plaques were displayed. The main plaque between the lobby and the elevators is approximately 11 feet wide by five feet high and displays 245 names, with some empty spaces for future donors. Around the various departments, 80 other plaques bear the names of those donors who met a certain giving level in the campaign.

"There are so many generous donors in our community, including our employees, who wholeheartedly supported this campaign to help us reach this $2.7 million," said Vice President of Fund Development Sara Schumacher.

Employees contributed to the Capital Campaign through the "Hearts the Care" five-year employee giving campaign, which raised an astonishing $317,000, more than tripling its original goal. Mrs. Schumacher said more than 50 percent of all employees committed to this five-year donation program because it benefitted the heating and cooling upgrades in patient rooms.

Some of the bricks and mortar improvements made possible by this campaign include:

  • Expansion of the hospital's first floor to add four new operating suites.
  • The addition of new Image Guided Radiation Therapy (IGRT) equipment within the Sweeney-Melenyzer Pavilion and Regional Cancer Pavilion.
  • Expansion of the Hyperbaric Oxygen Treatment (HBOT) and the Center for Wound Management program within the first floor of the Charles L. and Rose Sweeney-Melenyzer Pavilion
  • Upgrades to the hospital's air conditioning/heating systems, boilers, interior/exterior lighting and main electric transformers

Monongahela Valley Hospital's "Focus on the Future" Capital Campaign was launched in 2011.
