Monongahela Valley Hospital Receives VHA Performance Excellence Award

VHA Inc. is a national network of not-for-profit health care organizations working together to improve performance and efficiency in clinical, financial and operational management. Serving 5,100 health system members and affiliates, VHA represents more than a quarter of the nation's hospitals and is based in Irving, Texas.

Monongahela Valley Hospital has been recognized for achieving excellence in patient safety and clinical performance with the 2014 VHA Mid-Atlantic Achieving Patient Care Excellence Award (APEX).

MVH is one of 12 health care organizations in the New York, New Jersey and Pennsylvania region to receive this level of recognition from VHA Mid-Atlantic, part of VHA Inc., a national network of not-for-profit health systems that guide members with solutions to improve clinical, operational and financial performance. Ninety acute care facilities were eligible to participate.

MVH received the Silver Level award for prevention of hospitalization-related complications, specifically hospital readmissions and venous thromboembolism events, which are cardiovascular (heart and blood vessels) illnesses including blood clots (vein thrombosis or DVT and pulmonary embolism or PE). Venous thromboembolism is the third most common cardiovascular illness after acute coronary syndrome and stroke.

MVH representatives will receive the 2014 APEX award at the Mid-Atlantic Board of Directors meeting on Feb. 19.

Each year, performance improvement specialists from the region's hospitals and health care systems develop criteria for the awards. For 2014, awards were based on exceptional performance for the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid quality measures and eight special focus areas. Organizations achieving superior performance for two or more of the measures earned award level placement.

"This is another achievement award showing the community what we live each day - every member of our team dedicates himself and herself to excellent care, the kind we want for our own mothers," said Louis J. Panza Jr., president and CEO of MVH. "We made both these concerns a priority, took a proactive approach and put procedures and systems into place that benefit our patients."

"The APEX award provides well-deserved and appropriate recognition to our VHA Mid-Atlantic members for their superior clinical performance," said Ken Braithwaite, senior vice president/executive officer, VHA Mid-Atlantic region. "Their achievements exemplify the dedication of their organization to provide exemplary clinical care and a culture of continuous quality improvement. We congratulate their outstanding achievement and celebrate their success."
